Duffle Bags: what they are and what size you need

The duffel bag, duffle bag, or kit bag is a large bag made of natural or synthetic fabric (typically canvas), with drawstring closure at the top. Usually, duffel bags are used by non-commissioned military personnel, as well as for travel or sports by civilians. When used by sailors or marines, a duffel bag is referred to as the seabag. A duffel's open structure and lack of rigidity make it well suited for carrying sports gear and similar bulky objects.

Many people confuse a duffel bag with a hard-bottomed, hoop-handled bag, commonly referred to as a gym bag.

How big of a duffle bag do you need?

  • 30-50 liters: For a weekend trip, luggage that has a capacity of about 50 liters or less usually suffices.
  • 50-75 liters: For a trip lasting one to two weeks, many people choose a bag of this size.
